I run Personify, which builds AI versions of coaches and experts so their clients can get answers between sessions. That means most of my working life is spent around people whose job is developing other people, which is how I ended up reading mentoring research in the first place.

Mentr is separate from Personify. I write it myself, and the commercial relationship is set out on the about page rather than buried.

Why I write this

Because the published record on mentoring is in worse shape than the subject deserves. Most of what you find is a statistics roundup quoting another statistics roundup. Figures get repeated for years with no date attached to them. Frameworks get presented as established models with nobody named as having established them.

None of that requires special expertise to fix. It requires reading the original source and writing down what it actually says, including the year, which is what this site does.

What I am not

I am not an academic, and I have not run a corporate mentoring programme. Where this site describes how programmes work, it is reporting research and practitioner accounts rather than my own experience, and it says which.

What I can do is read a study properly, find whoever originally published a figure, and say plainly when a number cannot be traced back to anyone. On this subject that turns out to be most of the work.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, I would rather know than not. The whole point of dating and sourcing every figure is that you can check it, and occasionally that will mean finding something I got wrong. Corrections go to hello@mentr.me and get made.
